Everything here happens at dawn, which makes the drive the whole problem: the field opens before 05:00 and the roads in jam by 06:00. The weekends have the mass ascensions and the crowds, the weekdays have the same balloons with room to stand.

Getting there

Albuquerque’s Sunport is twenty minutes from downtown and has direct flights from most of the western US. A car is not optional: everything about this event is a pre-dawn drive.

Park-and-ride buses run from several lots across the city and are genuinely faster than driving yourself on the two weekends. The field opens at 04:30 for Dawn Patrol.

October mornings in the high desert start near freezing and reach shirt-sleeve warmth by lunch. The balloons only fly in calm air, so an early cancellation is always possible.
